Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About the Piano

The piano is held in high regard in the music world. Considered to be the ‘mother of all instruments’, it is the most recognizable and used instrument. It offers the player a wide range of musical variety and it has a very elegant appearance. It doesn’t matter if it is an upright or baby grand; the piano is the one instrument that captures the heart of all music lovers. It has been used to compose a wide range of music throughout the centuries and it will continue to do so long after we are gone.

The piano was created by Bartolommeo Cristofori in Florence, Italy. The name came from the Italian ‘pianoforte’. This means ‘piano’ and ‘loud’ in English. The piano originally had 85 keys which covered seven octaves known as A0 through A7. Over the years, three more keys were added to the piano, allowing the ranges of notes to be played to encompass 7 and 1/3 octaves. Incidentally, an octave is combination of 7 white and 5 black keys on the piano’s keyboard.

Currently there are four different types of piano that you can purchase, each with their own separate price tag. The upright piano is most commonly found in homes, schools, churches and any other establishment that has limited room for a piano. Baby Grand pianos are a smaller version of the Grand Piano and are best suited for new players. Grand Pianos and Concert Grand Pianos are usually found in auditoriums and concert halls. These are the best instruments to play, but they are usually too big and cost prohibitive for the average player. Each piano accommodates the player at different skill levels.

An acoustic piano ranges from $1,000 to $40,000 and can be made of a wide range of wood that contributes to the instruments color, size, sound, dependability and price. You can find less expensive pianos on the market, but you need to make sure that it doesn’t need a lot of repairs before you purchase it. If you don’t mind a digital piano, there are numerous manufacturers that make reliable pianos for your needs, namely Yamaha, Korg and Roland. These types of pianos are typically used in bands where portability is a requirement.

Everyone loves to gather around the piano during a family get together or the holidays. It is the perfect instrument to accompany someone playing the violin or flute, or even a singer. It is used in school chorus performances and even in small concert halls. It is one of the most versatile instruments in the world and it provides you with plenty of enjoyment.

Always make sure you properly care for you piano no matter what type it is in order to ensure that it provides you with a lifetime of enjoyment. If you properly care for your piano, you will be able to pass it on to your children and your grandchildren.
